My first new digital camera in a long, long time is a Canon PowerShot S3. I'm still getting used to it (and I'm an amateur, at best) and would describe early results as "acceptable". Basically, it's a regular point-and-shoot with a big zoom lens grafted on, so results have to be evaluated with that in mind.
This is what I was looking for in a camera:
- Good quality
- Easy to use
- Standard batteries (AA), no proprietary rechargeables
- Big zoom
- Small size
Perhaps I'll find a good pocket-cam as well and cover all my bases.

How much zoom does it have? I have a Nikon Coolpix S4 that's a year or two old now, with a 10x optical zoom, plus some more digital zoom after that. It just barely fits into my pocket, but I can't really sit down. That's ok for walking around the art museum, but probably wouldn't be for motorcyclin' it...
12x optical zoom. It is definitely *not* pocket-sized.
Another big-zoom option is the Canon SX100. A bit smaller and less expensive to boot.
CES is next month, lots of new cameras should be announced...
